Can-Am Rugby
Medical Report
SARANAC LAKE, NY -- The 28th annual Can-Am Rugby Tournament was
held August 4 & 5, 2001. Medical
coverage was provided by Lake Placid Sports Medicine and sponsored by
Aircast. Nine staff provided
coverage to twelve fields of play totaling over 157 hours of coverage.
The staff consisted of Athletic Trainers, Physical Therapists and
Emergency Medical Technicians. In
total, 259 injuries were seen over the two days of action. This was a small
increase over the 215 reported incidents for the 2000 Tournament.
“We thought there would even be more injuries because of the
hot, dry conditions and the hardness of the fields,” said Dr. Jack Gordon,
who advises the Can-Am Tournament on sports medicine issues.
A breakdown of the
injuries according to type and location follows. The number in parenthesis
is the data from the 2000 Can-Am Tournament.
